Carl Bildt on Thailand and Gripen
"I welcome the fact that at its meeting yesterday, Thailand's government decided to initiate negotiations with Sweden on the purchase of both Gripen and the reconnaissance aircraft Erieye", says Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt.
"The decision once again confirms that Gripen is a cost-effective system of absolute world class. The choice of Gripen has been made in tough competition with advanced US and Russian systems right up to the last minute.
"Of course, this news is also welcome for employment and the economy in Sweden.
"Talks on a possible sale of Gripen to Thailand have been conducted ever since the 1990s. The formal go-ahead for submitting a binding tender to Thailand was given in 2004. This information has subsequently been confirmed.
"Now we must await the results of the formal negotiations that will be held. When there is a formal agreement, a decision will be taken in accordance with the regulations that apply.
"I am happy to note that yesterday's meeting with Thailand's government also resulted in a formal confirmation that democratic elections will be held on 23 December. This will complete the country's return to civil, democratic governance."
