Today the website of the Swedish EU Presidency - se2009.eu - is launched. On the website the current issues and conferences within the Ministry of Integration and Gender Equality's area of responsibility are presented.

Nyamko Sabuni takes part in Baltic Pride

On May 15, the Minister for Integration and Gender Equality, Nyamko Sabuni, takes part in Baltic Pride in Riga. Nyamko Sabuni will be the key note speaker at a conference on LGBT issues in Europe. The Pride festival has previously met resistance when organized in the Latvian capital. For the first time, the LGBT movements in the Baltic states now jointly arrange a Pride festival.

The Swedish Embassy in Riga also supports the Pride festival, partly by fascilitating the arrangement of the exhibition Article One, orginally presented during EuroPride in Stockholm last year.

Japanese minister on visit

Today State Secretary Mr. Christer Hallerby received the Japanese Minister of Consumer Affairs, Ms. Seiko Noda. During the meeting they discussed consumer protection and consumer policy.

New EU strategy for youth policy

The Commission has adopted a new EU strategy for youth policy for the coming decade. The new strategy is cross-sectoral and involves key policy areas that affect Europe's young people, particularly youth education, employment, creativity and entrepreneurship, social inclusion, health and sport, civic participation, and volunteering. The new youth policy will be decided upon by the Council of the European Union in November during the Swedish EU Presidency. Before then, the Swedish Government will arrange a conference in Stockholm in September in order to discuss and gain support for the new youth policy.

The Swedish EU presidency: Current issues for the Ministry of Integration and Gender Equality

On 1 July 2009, Sweden will take over the Presidency of the EU. This means that for six months, Sweden will lead the EU's work and be responsible for ensuring that progress is made on a number of important EU issues. Current issues within the Ministry of Integration and Gender Equality's area of responsibility are now presented as well as the seven meetings arranged by the Ministry in Sweden.

German Minister on visit

The Swedish Minister for Integration and Gender Equality, Nyamko Sabuni, met with the German Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, Dr. Ursula von der Leyen, earlier today together with Minister Björklund. Von der Leyen is visiting Sweden to learn more about the Swedish pre-school system, and the ministers discussed childcare in Sweden and Germany. At the meeting, Nyamko Sabuni explained the Swedish government's introduction of a gender equality bonus, and the work carried out in schools to support mother tongue tuition to children of foreign background.

Sabuni's address at Swedish-Japanese symposium

On January 29 and 30 a Sweden-Japan Joint Symposium is held in Japan. The theme of this event is "Men's violence against women". See the Swedish minister for Integration and Gender Equality talk on the Swedish work against violence against women.

Dutch minister visits Sweden

The Swedish minister of Integration and Gender Equality, Nyamko Sabuni met with the Dutch minister of Youth and Families, André Rouvoet, earlier today. The two ministers, who are both responsible for youth policy in their respective countries, discussed young people's health and participation in civil society. Nyamko Sabuni explined how the Swedish government supports youth participation and outlined initiatives that have been taken to promote young people's health and well-being.
The Dutch minister descibed the youth and family programme that was adopted in the Netherlands in 2007, as well as the work to promote integration among youth in the Netherlands.

The ministers also discussed the upcoming Swedish chairmanship in the European Union. The primary priority for the Swedish chairmanship will be to come to a decision on the future framework for cooperation within the youth field.

Estonian Minister on visit

Nyamko Sabuni, Minister of Integration and Gender Equality, today received Urve Palo, Estonian Minister of Population and Ethnic Affairs, in Stockholm. The Ministers discussed their countries' work with integration issues, in particular language education, citizenship and the labour market. Nyamko Sabuni described the Swedish system for newcomers and the division of responsibility between the state and the municipalities when it comes to languages education. Urve Palo highlighted the Estonian organization for issues of integration and elaborated on the Estonian requirements for citizenship.

Nyamko Sabuni opens Rights Work!

On Thursday November 6, Nyamko Sabuni, Swedish Minister of Integration and Gender Equality opened the Conference Rights Work with an opening speech.
