Marie Jacobsson elected as member of the UN International Law Commission
Marie Jacobsson, LL.D., Principal Legal Adviser on International Law at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, was today elected by the UN General Assembly to serve as a member of the UN International Law Commission. She will become the first Swedish member since 1961, and the third woman ever to serve in this capacity.
Marie Jacobsson was elected amidst tough competition from many prominent experts in international law after being nominated by the five Nordic countries.
"It is extremely gratifying that Marie Jacobsson has been elected as a member of this prominent body. International law constitutes a cornerstone in Swedish foreign policy and in Nordic cooperation. With her knowledge and long experience of international law, Dr Jacobsson will be able to do an extremely good job," says Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt.

The UN International Law Commission was established by the General Assembly in 1946 with the aim of promoting the ongoing development and codification of international law. It consists of 34 members elected by the General Assembly on the basis of their personal competence for a five-year term.
The Commission meets annually in Geneva for a period of three months and its work includes preparing drafts of international conventions and treaties.
Marie Jacobsson is one of the Ministry's two Legal Advisers on International Law. Previous holders of this position at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs include Östen Undén, Hans Blix, Bo Johnson Theutenberg and Ove Bring.
