This year's Right Livelihood Award winners announced
This year's winners of the 'alternative Nobel Prize', the Right Livelihood Award, were unveiled today. Four award winners - three individuals and one organisation - are honoured for their work on practical solutions to the great challenges of our time. Swedish and foreign journalists gathered in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs International Press Centre for the announcement of the winners.
Ewa Björling focuses on growth measures at the Competitiveness Council
On Thursday 29 September, Minister for Trade Ewa Björling will attend the Competitiveness Council meeting. The focus of discussions will be on specific measures to strengthen European competitiveness - the Commission's standardisation package and the issue of a single European patent.
Gunilla Carlsson on the death of Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai
"It was with great sorrow that I learned of the death of the Nobel Peace Laureate Wangari Maathai. Wangari Maathai was a pioneer in the work for gender equality, democracy, climate and the environment, in Africa and the world,"says Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson on the occasion of the death of Wangari Maathai.
Ewa Björling to meet Malaysian trade minister
On Wednesday 28 September, Minister for Trade Ewa Björling will meet Malaysian Minister of International Trade and Industry Dato' Sri Mustapa Mohamed for talks. The agenda includes bilateral economic issues and EU negotiations with Malaysia on a free trade agreement.
"Malaysia is an important Asian partner and we have seen increased interest in Malaysia among Swedish companies. We also note that Swedish tourism to Malaysia is increasing," says Dr Björling.
Seminar with Ban Ki - moon and mingle with Reinfeldt
UN Secretary - General Ban Ki - moon paid tribute to his predecessor at the seminar in memory of Dag Hammarskjöld arranged by Sweden on Thursday 22 September:
"It is important to remember Dag Hammarskjöld's legacy - it shaped this organisation. He saw himself just as much as a civil servant as a leader. I have always been inspired by Dag Hammarskjöld - his courage and his integrity, intelligence and idealism," says Ban Ki-moon.

Ewa Björling to meet Ghana's trade minister Hanna Tetteh
On Tuesday 27 September, Minister for Trade Ewa Björling will receive a trade delegation from Ghana, headed by Minister for Trade and Industry Hanna Tetteh. During her visit to Sweden, Ms Tetteh will meet a number of Swedish companies with an interest in the Ghanaian market, together with the Swedish Trade Council and Open Trade Gate Sweden.
Ewa Björling discusses world trade issues with EU trade ministers
On Monday 26 September, Minister for Trade Ewa Björling will meet EU trade ministers in the framework of the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) in Brussels. The agenda items include Russia's accession to the WTO, the negotiations on free trade agreements with India and Ukraine, and EU trade relations with the United States and China.
Sweden elected to the board of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
At the IAEA General Conference yesterday, Sweden was elected to the IAEA Board of Governors for a period of at least two years. Sweden was most recently on the Board between 2004 and 2007. Sweden's special Board representative - or Governor - for the next governing period is Sweden's Ambassador in Vienna, Nils Daag, who is also accredited to the UN and the international agencies.
Ewa Björling to visit Washington
Ewa Björling will take part in the Transatlantic Task Force on Trade in Washington on Friday 23 September. She will also meet representatives of the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce (SACC) and give an opening address at the launch of the new Swedish American Green Alliance (SAGA) initiative, which will take place at House of Sweden.
Dr Björling will also take part in meetings on trade policy issues with the President's international economic affairs advisers Michael Froman and Miriam Sapiro (USTR).
