Carl Bildt and Jonas Gahr Støre discuss freedom of expression
Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt and his Norwegian colleague Jonas Gahr Støre are hosting a discussion today on freedom of expression at the International Peace Institute in New York. The aim is to raise the issue of freedom of expression onto the international agenda. The event is intended to mark the adoption and announcement of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights sixty years ago.

Carl Bildt participating in international meeting on support to Palestinians

MFA at Göteborg Book Fair
Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson will take part in two seminars at the Göteborg Book Fair on Saturday. On Sunday, Minister for Trade Ewa Björling will answer questions at the Government Offices' stand.
Ministry for Foreign Affairs' representatives will be in attendance throughout the Fair and will provide information about the Government's work with human rights.
Carl Bildt to visit the United States
Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt is going to New York on 21-27 September and will attend the General Debate of the UN General Assembly.

Sweden to send civilian observers and logistics support to Georgia
The Government decided today that Sweden will contribute personnel and equipment to the EU civilian observer mission in Georgia. The first Swedish observers will depart for Georgia this week.
Foreign policy in 2008 Statement of Government Policy
On Tuesday, the Prime Minister delivered his Statement of Government Policy to the Riksdag and the Head of State. In the sections that concerned foreign policy, he stated that Sweden must be an open country and that Russia's attack on Georgia further illustrates the importance of a well-considered foreign, defence and security policy. He also said that Sweden will continue to enhance its capability to take part in operations promoting peace and stability in different parts of the world.
Council of Europe and OSCE discuss situation in Georgia
Carl Bildt, the Committee of Ministers chairman, met Finland's Foreign Minister and OSCE chairman Alexander Stubb in Brussels on 15 September and discussed common interests including the situation in Georgia. They called for strict adherence to the six-point ceasefire agreement and declared "fundamental" the return of Russian troops to their positions held prior to 7 August.
New strategy for cooperation with Mozambique
Today, the Government adopted a new strategy for development cooperation with Mozambique for the period 2008-2012. The appropriation for Mozambique will amount to SEK 750 million per year.
