Carl Bildt to Budapest to open Raoul Wallenberg exhibition

On 17 januari 1945 Raoul Wallenberg was arrested by the Soviet Army. On exactly the same date, 67 years later, Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt and the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs, János Martonyi, will open a Raoul Wallenberg exhibition at the National Museum in Budapest. The exhibition is called "To me there's no other choice - 1912 - 2012". Mr Bildt will also give a lecture at the Central European University.

Sweden takes over Presidency of UNDP, UNFPA and UNOPS

In 2012, Sweden will lead the work of the joint Executive Board of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). Spearheading the assignment is Sweden's Ambassador to the UN Mårten Grunditz, who was elected as the new President of the joint Executive Board of the three UN bodies on 9 January.

Bilateral meeting and talks between foreign ministers Bildt and Tuomioja

On Monday 16 January, Finnish Minister for Foreign Affairs Erkki Tuomioja travels to Stockholm for a bilateral meeting with Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt about political issues of common interest. A press conference attended by both foreign ministers will take place at the Finnish Embassy at 14.45-15.00.

The EU must take a tougher line against Belarus

Today it is one year since Lukashenko's regime brutally hit out at peaceful demonstrators in Belarus following the rigged presidential election of 19 December 2010. To mark this anniversary, the foreign ministers of Sweden, the United Kingdom, Poland and Germany have joined forces. In an opinion piece published in several European newspapers today, they maintain that tougher EU sanctions are required against those responsible for the hardening repression in Belarus and that the EU must continue to strengthen its commitment to democratic forces in the country.

Presentation of Raoul Wallenberg Year 2012

On 20 December the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Swedish Institute and the Living History Forum presented the Raoul Wallenberg Year 2012 and the exhibition that will tour at least six countries next year.

Ministry for Foreign Affairs travel information - now also as Android app

Today, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs (MFA) is releasing its smartphone app 'UD Resklar' for Android mobiles. The app is aimed at Swedes who are planning to travel. The app has been available for the iPhone since the summer and version 1.1 was released in November. Improvements have now been integrated in the app for Android. With the travel app, the MFA provides up-to-date travel information on different countries around the world, direct to mobiles.

Ewa Björling to take part in FAC and WTO ministerial meetings

On 14 December, Minister for Trade Ewa Björling will meet her counterparts in the EU within the framework of the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC). On 15-16 December, Dr Björling will also take part in the WTO Eighth Ministerial Conference, where a decision on Russia's accession to the WTO will be taken.

UN humanitarian head to visit Sweden

On Friday 9 December, Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson will receive Valerie Amos, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Ms Amos and Ms Carlsson will participate in a seminar at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs under the heading 'The Horn of Africa: Humanitarian Situation and International Coordination'.

Sweden raised democracy and human rights issues at OSCE meeting in Vilnius

Security, democracy, human rights and the frozen conflicts in the region are in focus when ministers from the OSCE countries meet in Vilnius today and tomorrow for the 18th Ministerial Council. Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt is representing Sweden, and in his speech commented on the political situation in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. He also highlighted democracy and human rights, which are priority issues for Sweden.
