Baltfish to strengthen Baltic Sea cooperation

The Ministry of Agriculture hosted the first Baltfish meeting on 7-8 June. Baltfish is a forum for fisheries in the Baltic Sea. It is part of the Baltic Sea Strategy and aims at strengthening cooperation between the countries around the Baltic Sea. Marcus Öhman, Sweden's coordinator for fisheries in the Baltic Sea Strategy and the meeting's moderator, comments on the meeting.

The European Commission invites views on the Common Agricultural Policy beyond 2013

The EU Common Agricultural Policy is to be reformed by 2013. The European Commissioner for Agriculture, Dacian Ciolos, is now inviting all interested citizens and organisations - whether or not they work in the area of agriculture - to join the debate on the objectives and principles of the future EU agricultural policy You can read more about this on the Commission's website.

New state secretary, head of planning and press secretary to Eskil Erlandsson

The Government has appointed Magnus Kindbom to the position of State Secretary to Minister for Agriculture Eskil Erlandsson.

Rolf Eriksson, who until today has been State Secretary to Mr Erlandsson, moves on to new duties in Brussels.

Therese Nerlund, previously Press Secretary, is Mr Erlandsson's new Head of Planning. Anna-Karin Nyman is the new Press Secretary. Ms Nyman's most recent post was at the Centre Party Parliamentary Secretariat.

World Summit on Food Security, 16-18 November in Rome

On 16-18 November the world's leaders will gather at the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome to discuss how to turn the trend of rising numbers of starving and malnourished people, and how to promote sustainable global food security. The summit will adopt a political declaration containing commitments and political ambitions in a number of areas such as climate, trade, development assistance and agricultural development in developing countries. The summit is particularly relevant for Sweden in that food and climate are priority issues for the Swedish Presidency.

SEK 100 million to combat the food crisis in the poorest countries

The Government has given an additional grant to the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), which is to be used primarily to support small-scale agriculture in developing countries. Up to 25 per cent is to be used by IFAD, in cooperation with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), to pay for technical expertise to support small-scale agricultural projects.
