Nobel Peace Prize Laureates meet the Government

Wednesday, 12 December, the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates Mr Al Gore and the chairman of the IPCC Mr Rajendra K. Pachauri, are invited to Stockholm to meet Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt and his Government. The Laureates will also give a speech to the Riksdag.

Cecilia Malmström and Carl Bildt to attend Troika talks in Prague

On Wednesday and Thursday, 19-20 September, Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt and Minister for EU Affairs Cecilia Malmström will meet the Czech Republic's Deputy Premier for European Affairs Alexandr Vondra and Minister of Foreign Affairs Karel Schwarzenberg, as well as France's Minister of State responsible for EU Affairs Jean-Pierre Jouyet, in Prague.

Sten Tolgfors new Minister for Defence

Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt today appointed Sten Tolgfors Minister for Defence. The Prime Minister commented on the appointment as follows:

"During his time as Minister for Foreign Trade, Sten Tolgfors has shown good leadership qualities and an ability to successfully position Sweden in international contexts. Mr Tolgfors has been a Member of the Riksdag, a Political Adviser at the Ministry of Defence and has worked for the Swedish Red Cross. Through this, the prospects for success are good regarding the continued renewal of the Swedish Armed Forces and stronger international operations aimed at promoting international peace and security, and thus to our own security."

Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt's comments on the parliamentary election in Turkey

"Yesterday's parliamentary election in Turkey is one of the most important in Europe in recent years. Developments in Turkey are of major importance to the EU and to the world at large.

"According to the statements that have been made, the new government's policies will be characterised by increased democracy and continued political and economic reforms. This is a welcome and important condition for meeting the challenges that Turkey faces.

"Sweden fully supports Turkey's continued path towards full membership of the EU. It is vital that the incoming government infuses new energy into the internal reform process that constitutes the basis of the membership negotiations."
