Baltic Sea to be pilot project for cleaner seas
The Baltic Sea will be a pilot project in EU marine environment work. This was the result when EU environment ministers adopted Council conclusions on regional marine issues and on implementation of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region.
Secretary-General of the GCC visits Sweden
Tuesday 22 December Minister for Trade Ewa Björling received the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Mr Abdulrahman Bin Hamad al-Attiyah. The agenda includes the situation in Yemen, Iran, human rights and dialogue between cultures and civilisations.
Sweden to open trade office in Iraq
The Government today decided that Sweden will open a trade office in Baghdad. The office will be run by the Swedish Trade Council and will open soon.
Fredrik Reinfeldt leads EU during climate change conference
On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (16-18 December), Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt is in Copenhagen to represent the EU at the United Nations Climate Change Conference. Programme points included meetings with different heads of state and government, address to the assembled conference and an extra negotiations meeting called for by the EU.
Swedish greenhouse gas emissions at record low in 2008
Sweden continues to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, which in 2008 reached a record low when the emissions dropped by a further 2.2 million tonnes compared with 1990 levels. Total Swedish emissions have now fallen by almost 12 per cent since 1990.
Danish-Swedish initiative for climate and development
Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson, together with her Danish colleague Ulla Törnaes, today took a joint initiative during the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen on continuing the work on climate measures for developing countries after the summit.
Government climate compensation
On Thursday, the Government approved climate compensation for 2009 for travel undertaken by politicians and employees at the Government Offices. This means that the Swedish Energy Agency will be tasked with calculating and purchasing emissions reductions equivalent to the emissions generated by travel undertaken by government officials.

Sweden to contribute SEK 20 million to UNICEF
In connection with the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, Sweden will make an extra contribution of SEK 20 million to UNICEF's efforts to implement Security Council Resolution 1882 on children in armed conflict.
EU-Russia summit in Stockholm
On Wednesday, 18 November Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt chaired the EU summit with Russia. The two priority issues during the Swedish Presidency - climate change and the economic and financial crisis - were on the agenda, as well as energy issues, foreign affairs, trade policy and human rights.
