Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt welcomes Iceland's EU application

Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt on the decision reached today by the Icelandic Parliament to apply for membership of the European Union:

"I welcome the decision of the Icelandic parliament to apply for membership of the European Union. The application will be assessed in accordance with the EU's established procedures", states Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt.

Vattenfall has to report on their work regarding nuclear safety

The Swedish Ministry of Enterprise and Energy calls for a special report from the state owned company Vattenfall AB on how they work with nuclear safety. The request has arisen due to the problems that have occurred in some of the nuclear reactors in Germany as well as the criticism which the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority has leveled against the safety routines at the Swedish nuclear power station Ringhals.

On Monday 6 July Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson met Marta Santos Pais, the UN Special Representative on Violence against Children. Sweden is now increasing its commitment to children's rights by supporting the newly appointed UN representative to combat violence against children. Sweden will begin its economic support by making an initial contribution of SEK 3 million.

Nordic countries sign agreements on credits to Iceland of 1.775 billion euro

Loan agreements have today been signed between Iceland and Denmark, Finland and Sweden respectively, and between Seðlabanki Íslands, guaranteed by Iceland and Norges Bank, guaranteed by Norway. Under the agreements the Nordic lenders stand ready to provide Iceland with total credits of 1.775 billion euro.

Andreas Carlgren to Greenland on 30 June-3 July

Environment ministers from 30 countries will gather for informal discussions on key issues in the international negotiations on climate change.

Andreas Carlgren to attend Major Economies Forum in Mexico on 22-23 June

Minister for the Environment Andreas Carlgren will visit Mexico on 22-23 June to attend the third climate and energy meeting within the framework of the Major Economies Forum (MEF). The aim is to discuss the levels of ambition and content of a coming international climate agreement. Mr Carlgren has been invited since Sweden will take over the Presidency of the EU on 1 July and he will lead the EU environment ministers at the UN climate change conference in Copenhagen in December.
