Nine newcomers join the Schengen area
Today 21 December the Schengen area expands to include nine new countries. For the new countries, this means that land and sea borders with other Schengen countries will disappear.

Sweden opens three new embassies and phases out three others
Today the Government decided to open new Swedish embassies in Afghanistan, Sudan and Belarus. At the same time, Sweden's Mission to NATO in Brussels will be made a government authority in its own right. The Government has also decided to phase out the embassies in Angola, Philippines and Laos.
Swedish greenhouse gas emissions are declining
Swedish emissions fell by 1.7 per cent between 2005 and 2006. The emissions have decreased by nearly nine per cent from 1990 levels. This means that Sweden has reduced its emissions by 12.7 per cent more than agreed under the Kyoto Protocol. This is shown by data on Swedish greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 to 2006 that the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency delivered to the Government today.
President of Liberia Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf visits Stockholm
The President of Liberia, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, is visiting Stockholm on 26-28 November. The President will have an audience with HM The King and talks and dinner at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, hosted by Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson. The President will meet Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt and Deputy Prime Minister Maud Olofsson. The President will also meet the Speaker of the Riksdag and will address the Riksdag on the topic of "Challenges of Post-Conflict Development".
Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt to meet French Prime Minister François Fillon
On Friday 23 November, the Prime Minister of France François Fillon is to visit Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt for talks followed by a working lunch. Their agenda includes preparations for cooperation between the French and Swedish EU Presidencies and the Summit in December.
Government adopts carbon offsetting for air travel
The Swedish Government is introducing carbon offsetting for ministerial international air travel. The emissions produced by air travel will be offset by supporting projects in developing countries that result in equivalent emission reductions.
Two embassies and two consulates phased out
The Government today decided to phase out Sweden's Embassies in Nicaragua and Botswana and the Swedish Consulates-General in Gdansk, Poland and Phuket, Thailand.
