Go-ahead for wind power at Stora Middelgrund
The Government has granted approval for a wind farm at Stora Middelgrund in the Kattegatt. The wind farm will triple Swedish wind power production compared with the present level. The decision sets out conditions to ensure the environment is protected.
Registration and stricter qualifying rules for teachers
On 27 May the Inquiry on Teachers' Qualifications and Authorisation presented its report Registration and stricter qualifying rules, to Minister for Education Jan Björklund. Under the Inquiry's proposals, registration will be required for a teacher to qualify to teach in school or to take charge of teaching activities in a preschool children's group. For registration, new teachers will need to successfully complete a probationary year after their degree in education. Under the proposals, the system of teacher registration and preschool teacher registration will enter into force in two stages in 2010.

Iraq Compact Annual Review Conference in Stockholm
Sweden will host the first Iraq Compact Annual Review Conference in Stockholm on 29 May 2008. Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt and Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt responded positively to a request to host the conference from the United Nations and the Government of Iraq.
Gunilla Carlsson attending ministerial meeting in Paris
Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson is attending the OECD-DAC annual ministerial meeting in Paris on 20-21 May. The climate issue is an important point of discussion for the ministers. Ms Carlsson has been invited to open the discussion in light of Sweden's involvement in the climate field. Items on the agenda include the rising food prices, the effectiveness of development assistance and how the donor community can better coordinate its activities in countries that are, or have been, in conflict.

Swedish operation in Chad to be extended
The Government will today submit a proposal to the Riksdag to extend the Swedish contribution to the EU military operation in Chad and the Central African Republic. The Bill proposes that the Swedish operation be extended to October 2008.
Nordic Globalisation Forum on 8-9 April 2008 in Riksgränsen
Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt will host the first ever Nordic Globalisation Forum on 8-9 April 2008 in Riksgränsen. The subject of the meeting is "A competitive Nordic region in a globalised world". The Nordic region faces a number of challenges both in terms of economic developments and with regard to the state of climate and energy issues. The main theme of the forum will therefore be the future ability to maintain competitiveness and welfare and to manage the challenge of climate change.
