Fredrik Reinfeldt received this year's Nobel Peace Prize laureates

On Monday 12 December, Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt received this year's Nobel Peace Prize laureates: Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee from Liberia and Tawakkol Karman from Jemen.

Government action plan against violent extremism

On 9 December, the minister responsible for democracy issues, Birgitta Ohlsson, presented the Government's action plan to protect democracy against violent extremism. The action plan consists of 15 measures and SEK 62 million is being set aside in 2012-2014 to strengthen preventive work.
"I am proud to present the first Swedish action plan against violent extremism. We must defend the cornerstones of democracy, including the rule of law, freedom of expression and other fundamental human rights," says Birgitta Ohlsson.

Prime Minister discussed summit with Committee on European Union Affairs

On Wednesday 7 December, Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt held a consultation with the Riksdag's Committee on European Union Affairs ahead of the European Council summit on 8-9 December.
"The summit will focus more than ever before on the economic crisis," said Mr Reinfeldt in his opening speech.

Refugee and statelessness conventions celebrate 60th and 50th anniversaries

This year marks 60 years since the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and 50 years since the Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness were signed. This is being commemorated with a high-level meeting in Geneva. Sweden is being represented by Minister for Migration and Asylum Policy Tobias Billström

Fredrik Reinfeldt received Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte

On Monday 5 December, Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt received the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, in Stockholm. The agenda included the economic situation in Europe, the meeting of the European Council on 8-9 December and other current EU issues. A webcast press briefing was held at Rosenbad after the meeting.

ICT for Everyone - A Digital Agenda for Sweden

To meet the challenges that exist both internationally and nationally, the Swedish Government wishes to make use of the opportunities offered by digitisation, and has therefore taken a decision on ICT for Everyone - A Digital Agenda for Sweden and proposed a new goal for ICT policy, that Sweden should become the best in the world exploiting the opportunities of digitisation.

Environment, integration and prosperity prime goals for the EU Baltic Sea Strategy

Saving the environment, increasing integration and increasing prosperity. These are the Government's three primary goals for the EU Baltic Sea Strategy, said Minister for EU Affairs Birgitta Ohlsson at a hearing on the Strategy in Stockholm on December 30th.

Proposal on higher capital adequacy requirements to reduce vulnerability of the Swedish economy

The Government is to propose higher capital adequacy requirements for systemically important banks in an effort to strengthen the stability of the Swedish banking system and reduce the vulnerability of the Swedish economy. The proposal means that the banks are to have core Tier 1 capital equivalent to at least 10 per cent of risk-weighted assets in 2013 and 12 per cent of risk-weighted assets in 2015. Minister for Financial Markets Peter Norman will give a more detailed presentation at a press conference today.

The Government decided today to appoint Joakim Stymne as State Secretary at the Ministry of Culture. From 2006 until now, Mr Stymne has worked as State Secretary for International Development Cooperation at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. As previously announced, State Secretary Ingrid Eiken is leaving the Ministry of Culture to take up a position on 15 February 2012 as Managing Director of Mäklarsamfundet (association of estate agents).
