Research in Sweden

Research lays the foundation for the development of knowledge in society. In relation to the size of its population, Sweden is one of the countries that invests the most public resources in research. Publicly funded research in Sweden has been at a relatively stable level for many years - just under 1 per cent of GDP. Most of these public funds go to academia, i.e. universities and other higher education institutions. Sweden has chosen a model in which public funds for research are primarily linked to universities. In many other countries, the main publicly funded research organisations are institutes that are not tasked with educating students.

Sweden has a long tradition of collaboration between academic research and the major industrial enterprises. The Swedish business sector's investments in research and development, which amount to some 3 per cent of GDP, are among the largest in the world in relative terms.
