In Sweden, the state is responsible for 14 universities and 22 higher education institutions. Private education providers amount to slightly more than ten, of which the three largest are Chalmers University of Technology, Jönköping University and the Stockholm School of Economics.

Education and cooperation

The main task of higher education is to provide education based on science or art and on tested experience.

Higher education institutions are expected to cooperate with the surrounding community and to provide information about their activities. They must always observe and promote equality between women and men, and an understanding of other countries and of international conditions.

Objectives of higher education

In addition to the knowledge and skills in the educational field concerned, the general objectives of higher education are to develop the ability of students to:

  • make independent and critical assessments,
  • independently solve problems, and
  • follow the development of knowledge.

Higher education should also develop students' ability to seek and evaluate knowledge at a scholarly level. Specific objectives are defined for all higher education degrees.
