Continued Swedish participation in UN mission in Lebanon
The Government is presenting a Bill to the Riksdag today proposing continued Swedish participation in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
Sweden intends to contribute one corvette to the UNIFIL naval component for an additional four months.
"In the volatile situation that still exists in Lebanon, the presence of UNIFIL has an important and stabilising effect, particularly since UNIFIL is accepted by all parties in the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East," says Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt.
The mission is being carried out within the framework of UN Security Council resolution 1701, which is intended to assist the Lebanese government in restoring its sovereignty over the whole of its territory.
