Carl Bildt to visit the United States
Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt is going to New York on 21-27 September and will attend the General Debate of the UN General Assembly.
Mr Bildt will take part in the opening of the General Debate of the UN General Assembly, a range of ministerial meetings on matters including peace and security in Africa, an EU-US meeting of foreign ministers and a meeting between the EU and Russia. Mr Bildt is also planning bilateral meetings with foreign ministers from Iran, Pakistan, Macedonia, Colombia, Jordan and other countries. In addition, he will meet several senior UN officials including UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, the head of the UN Department of Political Affairs. Lynn Pascoe, the head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Sir John Holmes and the head of UN Peacekeeping Operations, Alain Le Roy. The week also includes a reception hosted by US President George W. Bush.
Along with his Norwegian colleague Jonas Gahr Störe, Mr Bildt will also chair a symposium on freedom of expression at the International Peace Institute think tank. This will be held on 25 September at 8.15-10.00. Media are welcome - contact IPI for more information (www.ipacademy.org).
