Swedish UN observers to Nepal
The Government today decided to send up to nine observers to the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN).
The purpose is to contribute to the ongoing peace process between Nepal's government and its communist (Maoist) party.
This action is being taken in the framework of UN Security Council Resolution 1740, which establishes a UN Mission in Nepal. It is intended to support the parties' work on implementing the peace agreement, signed on 21 November 2006. The most important task of the UN Mission is to monitor the parties' forces and weapons in the period prior to the parliamentary elections due to take place in mid-June 2007.
Sida and the Swedish Armed Forces are responsible for recruiting the observers. Sida and the Folke Bernadotte Academy have joint responsibility for training these observers.
