Carl Bildt to Strasbourg when Sweden assumes Chair of the Council of Europe
Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt is to visit Strasbourg on 6-7 May for a ministerial meeting at the Council of Europe and meetings with representatives of the Council of Europe Secretariat, Secretary-General Terry Davis, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg and representatives of the European Court of Human Rights.

Sweden is taking over the Chair of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe for six months, as of 7 May. Sweden will be prioritising core mandate activities of the Council of Europe, which are human rights, democracy and the principles of the rule of law.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt will assume the Chair after Slovakia at a meeting of foreign ministers on 7 May in Strasbourg, attended by representatives of the 47 Member States of the Council of Europe.
During the sixth months of its chairmanship, Sweden will also focus on issues related to the European Court of Justice, national action plans for human rights, the rights of the child and the rights of disabled people, gender equality, and youth and discrimination issues.
