Nuclear safety
The Swedish Nuclear Power Inspectorate (SKI) is an agency that works reactor safety and the safe handling of radioactive waste.
A scientific advisory body the Swedish National Council for Nuclear Waste (KASAM) supports the Ministry of Sustainable Development in matters concerning nuclear waste. The Board of the Swedish Nuclear Waste Fund is an agency that administers funds set aside to finance future costs for dealing with spent nuclear fuel.
The Ministry of the Environment is making efforts to ensure that the public will have good insight into the selection of suitable sites for the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel.
As reactors age, more attention needs to be given to reactor safety and radiation protection. The Swedish Radiation Protection Institute, which is the Ministrys expert agency, is following closely the maintenance work that is always under way. In international terms, Swedish nuclear reactors maintain a high safety level.
