Summary
The security situation in the Middle East is and has been very complex for a long time. Developments, positive and negative, tend to intermingle. In several ways the Middle East illustrates the character of our global security environment; the countries and the conflicts are closely intertwined, the geographical distances are short in the region, and the developments there are of utter most importance to the rest of the world. Even in Scandinavia, at greater geographical distance, we have once again recently learned how closely interlinked we are after all - conflicts can escalate quickly and involve actors we had not originally anticipated, with consequences we never could have imagined.
In this brief and straightforward article, Anders Strindberg gives us an insight of Syria's and the region's complex reality. Strindberg problemizes some of the sometimes simplifi ed images presented by the media, and gives us some important perspectives on symbolism and its political power, to better let us understand recent developments and possible future paths.
