Foreign policy
Sweden's policy towards other countries
In broad terms, foreign policy is about Sweden's policy towards other countries. The prevention of risks and threats is an important part of security policy, which in turn is part of foreign policy. Sweden's policy is pursued via direct relations with other countries and also through bodies such as the EU and the UN.
Freedom, peace and reconciliation
"Sweden's foreign policy is to contribute to freedom, peace and reconciliation both in our own and other parts of the world. It proceeds clearly from the values on which our own society is built and from our own interests. Efforts to promote democracy, human rights and sustainable development underlie Sweden's entire foreign policy."
This was stated by Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt when he presented the Statement of Foreign Policy to the Riksdag on 13 February 2008.
