Budget and objectives: International development cooperation

The objective of international development cooperation is to help create conditions that will enable poor people to improve their lives.
The objective for reform cooperation in eastern Europe are:

  • strengthened democracy
  • equitable and sustainable development
  • closer ties to the EU and its basic values

In the Budget Bill for 2009 the Government proposes a development assistance budget of SEK 33 863 billion for 2009, which corresponds to one per cent of estimated GNI.

The development assistance budget amounts to SEK 33 863 million, which corresponds to one per cent of GNI, as estimated when the budget was set. Deductions of SEK 3.8 billion are made from this budget for purposes such as refugee costs. The amount remaining under expenditure area 7, International development cooperation, SEK 30 109 million, includes appropriations for aid operations and reform cooperation in eastern Europe. It also includes SEK 45.6 million for cooperation with eastern Europe that is not classified as development assistance.
