Barents and Arctic cooperation

Cooperation between states with an interest in the Arctic and the area around the Barents Sea takes place in the Arctic Council and the Barents Euro-Arctic Council.

The Arctic region has many definitions (north of the Polar circle, or the tree line, the
10°C July isotherm, different types of permafrost and sea-ice cover). In practice, the area of cooperation is the area the participating countries decide to include in the cooperation on each separate issue. For the Barents Euro-Arctic Council, however, the definition is precise. The Barents Region comprises thirteen counties in northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and Northwest Russia. The Swedish counties are Norrbotten and Västerbotten.
