Objectives and budget

Objective

The objective of media policy is to support freedom of expression, diversity and the independence of and accessibility to mass media, as well as to combat harmful elements in mass media. This has been approved by the Riksdag (Govt. Bill 2000/01:1, expenditure area 17, Committee Report 2000/01:KrU1, Parliamentary Communication 2000/01:59).

The 2007 Budget

Some SEK 755 million has been allocated to the media policy area for 2007.

The media policy area

The policy area covers the daily press, radio and television, and the protection of children and young people from harmful content in mass media.

The policy area includes the Press Subsidies Council, the Talking Newspapers Subsidy Council, the Swedish Radio and TV Authority, the Broadcasting Commission, the National Board of Film Classification, Sveriges Television AB, Sveriges Radio AB and the Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company.

The policy area is divided between expenditure areas 1, Governance, and 17, Culture, the media, religious communities and leisure activities.
