Cultural diversity

Sweden has developed into a very culturally diverse country, partly as a result of migration in recent decades and increased internationalisation. This must be reflected in the activities of cultural institutions that receive public funding.

The long-term goals for the government agencies and some institutions in the Ministry's sphere of responsibility has for a long time been to integrate a multicultural perspective in their work. The Swedish National Council for Cultural Affairs has adopted an action plan whose aim is for multiculturalism to permeate all activities in the cultural field.

The Ministry of Culture designated 2006 as a Year of Multiculture in order to further highlight and reinforce diversity in cultural life.

Regional multicultural consultants

The regional multicultural consultants decided on by the Riksdag in 2002 are now operating in Stockholm County Council, Södermanland County Council, Region Skåne, Västra Götaland Region, Västmanland County Council, the Jämtland County Museum and Västerbotten County Council.
