Archives

One aim of state activities in the archives field is to make it possible to access official documents and other archive material. State archive activities are also intended to clarify and reinforce the importance of archives as a source of information and knowledge about society and its development. In addition, state archives do work on methods and knowledge development in the archive field.

Archives

Riksarkivet - the National Archives

The National Archives is the central administrative authority for archive issues and the governing authority of the Regional Archives, Landsarkiven. The main tasks of the National Archives are to promote good archive management and also to preserve and care for archive materials, to make them accessible and to bring them to life. The Military Archives, Krigsarkivet, form part of the National Archives. The National Archives provide some museum services like preservation and preventive care of objects.

Landsarkiven - the Regional Archives

The Regional Archives, which are in Göteborg, Härnösand, Lund, Uppsala, Vadstena, Visby and Östersund, are the archive authorities for central government agencies in their district. In Stockholm County the duties of the Regional Archives are performed by the Stockholm City Archive and in Värmland County they are performed by Värmland Archives, which is run by the Värmland Region, a federation set up by the county council and municipalities in the region.

Institutet för språk och folkminnen - Institute for Language and Folklore

The Institute for Language and Folklore is a government agency that works on a scientific basis to increase knowledge of dialects, folklore, folkmusic, place names and personal names.
