Environmental and climate aid
The Government wants to give clearer priority to environmental and climate issues in its development cooperation with other countries. Aid to help partner countries meet climate and environmental challenges is therefore one of the most important elements of Sweden's new development cooperation. Environmental and climate aid is an area where there are good conditions for close and broad-ranging cooperation between Swedish agencies, businesses and organisations.
In 2008, SEK 40 million of the development cooperation budget has been made available to the Ministry of the Environment for special environmental and climate initiatives.
The money has been divided as follows:
- SEK 15 million will be used for climate-related measures These resources will be used for capacity-enhancing measures for developing countries so as to improve the chances of achieving a stronger climate regime after 2012. They will also be used to increase opportunities for participants from developing countries, particularly the least developed countries, to attend and play an active part in meetings during the multilateral negotiation processes under the Climate Convention and the Kyoto Protocol.
- SEK 12 million will go to multilateral measures The money will be used for follow-up of Agenda 21 and of the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation agreed at the World Summit on Sustainable Development, particularly within the framework of the UN Commission for Sustainable Development (CSD). The funds are also intended to meet increased costs arising from negotiations on and implementation of the global environmental conventions and associated protocols.
- SEK 7 million has been set aside to promote participation by developing countries This primarily concerns participation by the least developed countries in multilateral negotiations on environmental issues. The intention is also to promote results-oriented relevance and effectiveness in international processes in environmental matters.
- SEK 6 million will go to UNEP development work
