Health Forum - South Africa and Sweden in cooperation
The purpose of the Health Forum is to facilitate a policy dialogue within the public health field to establish longterm cooperation between South Africa and Sweden.
The aim of the cooperation is to facilitate:
- policy dialogue in the area of public health,
- experience and information sharing,
- human resource development, and
- transfer and sharing of know-how.
Meetings
The first Health Forum was held in Pretoria, South Africa, in March 2003. There and then the two countries agreed upon guidelines for future cooperation. The Health Forum meets once a year. The latest meeting took place in Stockholm in April 2006.
Background
In connection with a visit to South Africa in 1999 by the Prime Minister of Sweden South Africa initiated the creation of a bilateral commission to deal with political, social and economic issues, the Bi-National Commission (BNC).
South Africa as well as Sweden both expressed desire for cooperation and collaboration in the public health area. In 2000 the cooperation resulted in an agreement to establish the Health Forum to act as a coordinating body as regards bilateral projects within the field of public health.
Progress reports on the general performance, specific programmes and projects of the Health Forum is presented to the Bi-National Commission.

Seminar on HIV/AIDS and reproductive health
During the Bi-National Commission (BNC) meeting in Stockholm in September 2003, the Health Forum arranged an expert seminar on HIV/AIDS and reproductive health.
The Health Forum successful cooperation between Sweden and South Africa
The Health Forum is holding its second meeting in Stockholm on 16-17 March. The agenda will be topped by a series of reports on what has been achieved since the first meeting of the Forum in South Africa in March 2003. Over the past year we have found a way to work together that functions well, with an enriching exchange between the officials in our countries, say Mmathari Kelebogile Matsau, Director-General of the South African Department of Health, and Ewa Persson Göransson, State Secretary at the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs.
