Divisions and Secretariats
The divisions and secretariats of the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs are staffed by non-politically appointed public officials.
Work in the Ministrys areas of responsibility is carried out at four divisions and at the Swedish Inheritance Fund Commission Secretariat:

- Social Services Division
- Public Health Division
- Health Care Division
- Swedish Inheritance Fund Commission Secretariat
The Ministry also has four secretariats which provide guidance, service and support for the leadership and divisions:

- Coordination Secretariat
- Division for EU- and International Coordination
Senior officials
Divisions and secretariats are led by a director. The head of the Legal Secretariat is the Director-General for Legal and Administrative Affairs, who is the Ministrys most senior non-political official.

Areas of responsibility
Health Care Division
The Health Care Division is responsible for matters broadly concerning health and medical care, dental care and pharmaceuticals.
Areas of responsibility:
- health and medical care and other medical issues
- psychiatric care
- health care for the elderly
- dental care
- medicinal products, cosmetic products, medical devices and the pharmacies
- health care personnel
- medical ethics
Public Health Division
The Public Health Division is responsible for preparing matters and issues in the public health policy area.
Areas of responsibility:
- coordination of the national public health policy
- alcohol
- narcotic drugs
- doping
- tobacco
- eating habits and physical activity
- sexual and reproductive health
- gambling addiction
- communicable diseases control
- health protection
- mental health
Social Insurance Division
The areas of responsibility of the Social Insurance Division include financial support for families, sickness insurance and pensions.
Areas of responsibility:
- financial security for families and children
- financial security in old age
- financial security in the case of illness and disability
- social insurance administration
Social Services Division
The tasks of the Social Insurance Division primarily relate to legislation, general guidelines and inspection.
Areas of responsibility:
- issues of the elderly
- social services:
- individual and family services
- state-run care of young persons and substance abusers
- coordination of disability issues
- support and assistance in the disabilities area
Legal secretariat
The Legal Secretariat is a joint staff function for the whole Ministry. The secretariat is responsible for coordination of the ministrys legal work.
Areas of responsibility:
- legal matters
- administrative law
- records/registry
Information Division
The Information Division is a joint staff function for the whole Ministry. The Division is responsible for internal and external information.
Coordination Secretariat
The Coordination Secretariat is a support unit both for the divisions and the political leadership.
Areas of responsibility:
- planning/budget
- international issues
- analysis/evaluation
- administrative support
- coordination of matters concerning the rights of the child in accordance with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child
- international adoptions
- internal and external information.
Swedish Inheritance Fund Commission Secretariat
The Commission Secretariat of the Swedish Inheritance Fund (SIF) prepares applications about support from SIF.
The Commission of SIF decides about grants to organizations with the purpose of supporting children, young people and people with disabilities.
Areas of responsibility:
- deciding what projects are to receive support
- informing the public about the Swedish Inheritance Fund
- spreading the knowledge and experience from the projects that receive support.
Matrix organisation
The Ministry for Health and Social Affairs is a matrix organisation. This means that apart from executive staff for the divisions specific areas of responsibility there are functions for analysis, budget, legal affairs, information and international issues.
