Police authorities
The Ministry of Justice is responsible for the police service.
Its task is to ensure that the police have the preconditions they need to perform the tasks assigned to them by the Government.
This primarily involves formulating targets and guidelines for the work of the police, taking part in the budget process and monitoring and analysing their operations, both at the national and international levels. However, neither the Ministry nor the Government has the authority to decide how an agency should apply a law or make a ruling in different cases.
The National Police Board is the central administrative agency for the police authorities and the chief agency for the National Body of Forensic Science. The National Police Board includes the National Criminal Investigation Department, the Swedish Security Service and the Police College.
