Democracy policy
Democracy policy deals with people's influence and participation in society, democracy and general elections, the development of democracy and support to the political parties.
The objective of democracy policy is a living democracy where the opportunities for an individual to exert influence are strong and human rights are respected. This objective is fulfilled primarily by ensuring transparency, influence and participation, by combating threats to democracy and by respecting human rights. The Government's most important tasks in this area are therefore to strengthen and safeguard democracy.
In a living democracy, all power proceeds from the people, and each individual has the opportunity to influence the decisions that affect their daily lives. The Government is therefore working to bring the individual closer to political decisions by providing better opportunities for active participation and good social cohesion where a person's right to self-determination is not restricted by other individuals.
Sweden must respect its international commitments regarding human rights. The Swedish legal system must be in line with the international conventions that Sweden has signed, and these must be followed at all levels of society.
Priority areas of democracy policy are:
- measures to safeguard democracy against violent extremism,
- elections and voter turnout,
- strengthened transparency, influence and participation in the democratic process,
- broader influence by means of eTools,
- democracy research, and
- continued systematic human rights efforts in Sweden.
