An information society for all

The goal for IT policy in Sweden is that "Sweden must be a sustainable information society for all". This implies an accessible information society with a modern infrastructure and IT services of public benefit, so as to simplify everyday life and give women and men, young people and old in every part of the country a better quality of life.

To define the main goal more precisely, there are three subgoals:

  1. IT must contribute to a better quality of life and help improve and simplify everyday life for people and companies.
  2. IT must be used to promote sustainable growth.
  3. An effective and secure physical infrastructure for IT, with high transmission capacity, must be available in all parts of the country so as to give people access to, among other things, interactive public e-services.

The Government has identified two essential conditions for achieving these goals:

  • Public confidence in IT
  • Coordination

Evaluation and follow-up of IT policy

The Government believes that IT policy should be evaluated, which requires methods that are adapted to fit the most important areas. The Bill therefore proposes an overall evaluation of the principal goal of IT policy, the three sub-goals and how successful efforts to increase public confidence in IT and improve the coordination of policy have been.

Policy scope

IT policy is part of a policy area which includes electronic communications, information technology and postal communications, basic cashier service and the emergency telephone service.

The overall policy objective for electronic communications, IT and postal services is to ensure that everyone has accessibility to an infrastructure and associated public services that are efficient in terms of the economy as a whole and sustainable in the long term.
