Mining and minerals policy

Objectives

The objectives of the national mining and minerals policy are to ensure that extraction of mineral resources gives consideration to a long-term balanced development and new employment opportunities.

Favourable position

Sweden has a fairly good record on prospecting for ore and mineral deposits and also for the opening of new mines.
The Geological Survey of Sweden produces geological mapping on, for example, ore-bearing areas. The Mineral Resources Office, located in Malå, Västerbotten County is a branch within the Geological Survey. The Mining Inspectorate is the administrative agency responsible for processing permits under the Minerals Act.

The Minerals Act

In October 2004 the Government submitted the bill Amendments to the Minerals Act (Govt. Bill 2004/05:40) to the Riksdag. In the Bill the Government proposes amendments in the Minerals Act (1991:45) to promote a better balance between prospectors/mining industry and landowners. According to the proposal, the amended Act will begin to apply on 1 May 2005.
