Organisation

A total of approximately 150 people work at the Ministry of Agriculture.

The Ministry has four specialist divisions:

• The Agriculture and Forestry Division works with issues concerning agricultural and forestry production, including questions of competitiveness and profitability in these industries. The Division also works on matters concerning bioenergy from agriculture and forestry, EU Common agricultural policy issues such as market regulation (excluding fisheries), direct support to agriculture, geographical designations of origin and certificates of specific character, and also the EU Agricultural Fund.
• The Animal and Food Division works with issues relating to food products as well as animal health and welfare. This includes veterinary matters, matters concerning feedingstuffs and animal by-products, genetic resources and genetic engineering (GMO), plant health and seeds.
• The Game Management, Fisheries and Sami Affairs Division is responsible for issues related to hunting and game management, fishery issues, the common EU fisheries policy, Sami issues, issues related to reindeer husbandry and state land above the cultivation limit.
• The Rural Growth Division is responsible for matters concerning rural growth and development and works to support company competitiveness, entrepreneurship and innovation, and sustainable forms of production. The Division is also responsible for environmental and natural resource issues relating to agriculture, environmental and rural development, organic farming, small-scale food production, the horse industry and national support to agriculture in northern Sweden.
  The Division is responsible for issues concerning higher education and research in the Ministry´s sphere of responsibilities. The Division also has an analytical function that serves the whole Ministry.

The Ministry also has four administrative sections:

• The Secretariat for Administration and Development is responsible for coordination of the budgetary process, development and coordination of agency management, operational planning, internal budgets and controls, personnel matters, administrative development and service, coordination of committees and those responsible for committee reports.
• The Legal Secretariat is responsible for legislative matters and other statutory issues as well as the preparation for other legal issues within the Ministry's remit.
• Information Section is responsible for the Ministr's internal and external communications. It is also responsible for dealing with correspondence.
• The Secretariat for EU Coordination and International Affairs is responsible for the overall coordination of issues concerning Sweden's membership of the EU and other international matters. The Secretariat coordinates the Ministry's work with the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the World Trade Organisation (WTO): The Secretariat is also responsible for coordinating the Nordic cooperation. Furthermore the Secretariat is responsible for the cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations(FAO), including the Swedish FAO Committee. The responsibility for the Ministry's international visits programme as well as agricultural counsellors and agricultural attachés also rests here.
