Government Bill on new grading scale

The Government has approved a bill entitled A new grading scale (Govt. Bill 2008/09:66). The Bill means that in the future the grading scale in all types of compulsory schooling will contain six levels, A-F, and a seventh level, indicated by a horizontal dash. The five levels A-E will stand for pass results and level F will be for results that do not merit a pass. If there is no basis at all for an assessment, no grade will be given, and this will be noted with a horizontal dash.

Minister for Higher Education and Research Lars Leijonborg will be visiting the USA from 10 to 18 November. The trip will begin with a study visit and meetings in Boston and Washington. From 16 to 18 November he will participate in a research conference between the EU and various American actors held in Atlanta.

SEK 5 billion to boost research and innovation

The Government's Research and Innovation Bill announces an increase in appropriations of SEK 5 billion over the period 2009-2012. Direct appropriations to universities and higher education institutions will be increased and the distribution of direct appropriations will be based on quality. Investments in research areas of strategic importance to Swedish society and the business sector will be introduced.

The Ministry of Education and Research in brief

The work of the Ministry of Education and Research covers two policy areas: education policy and research policy. The Minister for Education, and the head of the Ministry is Jan Björklund. The Minister for Higher Education and Research, Lars Leijonborg, is responsible for research.

The Ministry of Education and Research is responsible for issues concerning child care, preschool classes, compulsory and equivalent types of school, independent schools, school-age child care, upper secondary school, local authority adult education, advanced vocational education, supplementary educational programmes, popular adult education, the university and higher education system, research, financial support to students and student welfare issues.
