Areas of responsibility

The Ministry of Finance is responsible for handling government business in the following areas:

  • Central government budget

Does the central government budget affect my personal finances? Will I have more or less money in my wallet? Certainly, the Governments budget policy does affect ordinary people, Swedish businesses and organisations, and economic cooperation in Europe. The central government budget, in turn, reflects external circumstances such as the state of the global economy. The Government uses the budget to lay down the direction of economic policy.

  • Taxes

These days we encounter the tax system nearly every day, wherever we are. When we buy food, put petrol in the car, travel to work or receive child allowance. One of the tasks of the Ministry of Finance is to formulate proposals for legislation on taxes and social insurance contributions.

  • Banks, securities and insurance

Every time we use a credit or debit card to pay at a shop, borrow money to pay for our new flat or take out a pension insurance policy, we make use of the financial system. Whether we choose to consume or to save, we are participants in the financial market.

  • International cooperation

Swedens economy is affected by events in the global economy. The Ministry of Finance is responsible for Swedish participation in international economic and financial cooperation and prepares the ground for Sweden to take a position on a broad range of economic policy issues.

  • Local authorities

Is your municipality in good financial shape or does it have a hard time making ends meet? Not all of Swedens local authorities are in an equally good position to provide good, high-quality services to their residents. But whether you live in the city or the country, you are entitled to good services.

  • County administrative boards

In every county in Sweden there is a county administrative board. This board is a government agency that represents the Riksdag and Government in the county and serves the best interests of residents. It is the job of the county administrative board to see that the decisions taken by the Government and the Riksdag have the best possible effects in that county.

  • Public administration

Access and effectiveness are important to government activities. It should be easy for members of society to take advantage of the services offered by the authorities. The Ministry of Finance is responsible for the development of all aspects of public administration, from pensions to population and housing censuses.
