Committees
When dealing with important issues of current interest, the Government may choose to appoint a committee of inquiry.
-
Some matters on which the Government is working are more difficult to resolve than others and require more extensive analysis and preparation before data on which to base decisions can be produced. Examples range from major policy decisions affecting the whole of Swedish society over long periods to smaller but technically complex issues.
-
Before decisions of this kind are taken, the Government may choose to appoint a commission or committee of inquiry to examine the issues involved. Government committees of inquiry examine and report on matters in accordance with a set of instructions, or terms of reference, laid down by the Government. These identify the area or matter to be investigated, define the problems to be addressed and set a closing date for the inquiry.
-
When the assignment is completed, the results are published in one or more committee reports in the Swedish Government Official Reports series (SOU).
