New development strategy for Iraq

The Government today adopted a new strategy for development cooperation with Iraq for the period 2009-2014. The new strategy is designed to contribute to a lasting peace in Iraq, improved living conditions and democratic development.

"With the new strategy we are deepening our cooperation with Iraq in strategically selected areas. Strengthening democracy and human rights in Iraq continues to be a priority. We will also contribute to increased opportunities for poor people in Iraq to make a living by supporting the development of the Iraqi private sector and increasing Iraq's prospects of conducting trade with the rest of the world," says Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson.

Although Iraq as a country is actually rich, a large number of the Iraqi people live in poverty. Years of war, misrule and sanctions have torn the country apart. There are now somewhat brighter prospects for development than before, but major Iraqi efforts are required to combat poverty, achieve sustainable stability and increase respect for human rights. Swedish development assistance will support these efforts.

"The establishment this summer of a Swedish embassy in Baghdad that includes a Sida presence also creates new opportunities for Sweden to play an active role in development in Iraq," says Ms Carlsson.

Swedish development cooperation is guided by Iraq's need for capacity development. The participation of women and their enjoyment of human rights are an important starting point.
