New Board for the Swedish Institute in Alexandria

Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson took on the 2nd of June a Government Offices decision (Ministry for Foreign Affairs) on a new Board for the Swedish Institute in Alexandria.

Besides the Director, Tommy Arwitz, and the Chair of the Board, Bishop Emeritus Bengt Wadensjö, the Board consists of the following people:

Mohammad Fazlhashemi, Professor of history of ideas at Umeå University; Nadia Jebril, freelance journalist and student; Kerstin Lundgren, Member of the Riksdag; Hans Magnusson, Head of Department, Sida; Sylvia Nylin (re-election), Head of Communications, Swedish Tourist Association; Robert Rydberg, head of the Middle East and North Africa Department at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Olle Wästberg (re-election), head of the Swedish Institute.

The Institute's mission is to create points of contact between Europe and the Middle East and the North Africa region and to help foster mutual understanding of each other's cultural spheres. The Swedish Institute in Alexandria works primarily by arranging seminars, conferences and workshops. Areas of priority are youth, media, human rights, peace and research.

The Government established the Swedish Institute in Alexandria on 17 September 1998 through a Government decision. The Institute, which is part of the Swedish Foreign Service, was inaugurated in September 2000.
