The work of the Ministry of Environment during Sweden's Presidency of the EU

On 1 July 2009, Sweden took over the Presidency of the EU. This means that for six months, Sweden took over the lead of the EU's work and be responsible for ensuring that progress is made on a number of important EU issues.

A great deal of attention was given to environmental issues during the Swedish Presidency of the EU Council of Ministers in autumn 2009. During its Presidency, Sweden also represented the EU at the UN global conference of the parties in Copenhagen in December 2009.

Ministry of the Environment priorities

The Ministry of the Environment's four priorities for the Presidency were:

  • Climate
  • The marine environment
  • Biological diversity
  • Eco-efficient economy
