Consular issues and help for Swedes abroad

The MFA and the embassies assist and advise Swedish travellers, Swedes who reside abroad, those planning events such a wedding abroad or with other needs pertaining to civil law matters. The MFA and the embassies are prepared to act in the event of a major crisis, and carefully monitor events around the world.

One important task of the MFA and Swedish embassies is to provide help and advice to Swedes abroad (consular aid).
Swedish embassies around the world also draw up general travel information on various countries and places that can be useful for Swedish travellers.

When the MFA advises against travel

The MFA can occasionally advise against travel to countries in which war or war-like conditions prevail. Other disturbances, and in certain circumstances even terrorist attacks and natural disasters, can also result in the MFA advising against travel.
The MFA also maintains legal functions such as marriages abroad, legalisation of documents, international custody disputes and matters concerning wrongfully removed children.

Emergency preparedness

Major emergencies abroad in which Swedes are affected require coordinated action in Stockholm and at Swedish embassies and consulates. Good strategic monitoring and emergency planning are two important components of a broader approach that the MFA is continuously developing.
In the event of an emergency, additional resources are available, including a permanent consular stand-by team and a rapid response team.
