The foreign ministers discussed current political events in the world and developments in Latin America and Europe, including EU enlargement. The situation in Honduras, EU neighbouring areas, the Middle East and Iran were discussed.
In addition, the ministers established that the potential for cooperation between the countries in many areas was good, not least in light of the extensive Swedish industrial presence in Brazil. Carl Bildt emphasised the Swedish Government's support of SAAB's JAS Gripen in Brazil's procurement of fighter aircraft.
The foreign ministers signed a bilateral agreement on the creation of a mechanism for annual political consultations, to strengthen foreign policy dialogue and cooperation between Sweden and Brazil.
Sweden and Brazil also adopted a Strategic Partnership Action Plan, covering cooperation in several policy areas: political dialogue and cooperation in multilateral forums; trade and investment; bioenergy and biofuels; defence, climate change and sustainable development; science, innovation and high technology; and cultural exchange and education.
