Fredrik Reinfeldt on Russia's recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia
"It is extremely serious that President Medvedev has today decided to recognise Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states." This was said by Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, commenting on the situation.
"Russia's decision is contrary to international law and to fundamental principles for stability in Europe. This decision will have consequences for Russia's relations with the rest of the world.
"It is important for the conflict in Georgia to be resolved by peaceful means. Georgia's territorial integrity must be respected and we must see a full withdrawal of Russian troops. An extra EU summit on 1 September will give us the opportunity to discuss how we can best support Georgia."
