Sweden demands cease fire and withdrawal of Russian troops
Russia's Chargé d'Affaires in Sweden, Michail Skupov, was summoned today to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs where he was notified of Sweden's serious view of Russia's conduct in Georgia.
Acting Director-General for Political Affairs at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Mats Staffansson, stated to the Russian diplomat that Russia's conduct in Georgia is unacceptable and contravenes the international regulatory framework.
The Swedish Government is most concerned about the hardship endured by the local population and internally displaced persons in the crisis area and therefore urges Russia to immediately agree to a cease-fire and to break off hostilities - to enable humanitarian relief to reach the affected civilian population.
Sweden demands a withdrawal of all troops to the point that applied on 6 August, before the start of the crisis. Sweden also urges Russia to take part in the efforts of the international community to achieve a cease-fire and a peaceful solution to the conflict.
