Ministry for Foreign Affairs
Gunilla Carlsson to travel to Cambodia
Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson will travel to Cambodia on 9-14 May in her capacity as Chair of the International Commission on Climate Change and Development. Ms Carlsson will also meet with Cambodian representatives for a number of bilateral talks. Two members of the delegation are preparing to travel on to cyclone-hit Burma.
"Climate change represents perhaps the largest challenge of our time and it is often the poorest people that are hardest hit. The Commission's meeting in Cambodia will put a special spotlight on this fact," says Ms Carlsson.
"These issues gain new relevance when we see the enormous devastation that has struck Burma. During my visit I will pay particular attention to the developments in Cambodia's neighbour Burma."
The International Commission on Climate Change and Development comprises experts from different countries. Its task is to propose ways in which poor countries in particular can adapt to the new climate conditions and the type of support that is required from the rest of the world. The Commission is to present its final report in spring 2009.
During her visit to Cambodia, Gunilla Carlsson will be meeting Prime Minister Hun Sen and signing a cooperation agreement with Minister of Economy and Finance Keat Chhon. She will also meet Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hor Namhong. Meetings have also been scheduled with the Chair of Cambodia's Human Rights Committee and leader of the largest opposition party Sam Rainsy.
A press conference is planned in connection with the signing of the cooperation agreement in Phnom Penh on Monday 12 May at 17.30.
