Swedish-German Motorways of the Sea Project approved for EU co-financing
The Swedish and German Governments have worked very hard to concretize and develop the concept of Motorways of the Sea. As a result of these efforts, high class Motorways of the Sea projects have been submitted to the European Commission within the call for funding for Trans-European Transport Network.
The Swedish and German Governments can today inform that the jointly submitted project involving the ports of Trelleborg and Sassnitz has received EU co-financing of approximately 10 million euros. The aim of the project is to improve the transport corridor between Trelleborg and Sassnitz by upgrading the capacities of a rail/sea link combined with the development of new intermodal train services. Within the project there is also a potential for a significant modal shift from the road to combined rail-sea-rail transport. These measures will contribute to a more efficient transport corridor between Sweden and Germany.
- It is very satisfying that this Swedish-German Motorways of the Sea project has been approved by the Commission, which means that the transport corridor between Trelleborg-Sassnitz is acknowledge as one of the most important in the Baltic Sea and is of vital interest for the whole EU. We are confident that this project will contribute to an even more efficient and sustainable transport corridor between our countries say the Minister for Communications in Sweden Åsa Torstensson and the Minister of Transport in Germany Wolfgang Tiefensee in a jointly comment.
