Foreign policy is mainly conducted via contacts with representatives of other countries and organisations. These provide opportunities for the Minister for Foreign Affairs to put forward the Government's viewpoints on foreign policy. This is why a large part of the Minister for Foreign Affairs' time is taken up with meeting foreign colleagues, participating in political meetings and taking stock of the political situation on the ground in other countries. The Minister makes use of the time spent in transit to prepare himself for the visits. He is always accompanied on his visits by colleagues who assist him in his work in different ways and who have prepared background material.
