Carl Bildt on Burma/Myanmar

Statement by Mr Carl Bildt, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on the disaster in Burma/Myanmar and efforts to provide humanitarian assistance.

"I feel the deepest sympathy with the people of Burma/Myanmar, who have suffered staggering losses of life and vast material devastation as a result of tropical cyclone Nargis. The Swedish Government would like to offer its sincere condolences to the people of Burma/Myanmar and to the survivors of those who have died.

"All efforts must now be concentrated on helping the survivors and alleviating their distress. The international community, including Sweden, stands ready to provide urgent humanitarian assistance. I appeal to the authorities in Burma/Myanmar to cooperate fully with the international community and aid organisations, particularly with regard to visas, clearance and distribution of supplies, and access for aid workers to the areas affected, so that the much needed assistance can reach the people."
